EUGENE–University of Oregon junior Teresa Garcia has been selected as a Morris K. Udall Native American Summer Congressional Intern.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards the 10-week internships each summer to 12 Native American graduate and law school students. Garcia is one of the youngest students ever chosen for the program.

Garcia is pursuing a double major in international studies and environmental studies. She is a descendent of the Pascua Yaqui nation in Arizona Udall was instrumental in passing legislation that allowed the tribe to become a recognized Native American tribe.

"The Udall Foundation is strongly committed to the belief that future tribal leaders need to have a greater understanding of the way the federal government operates. It is equally important for congressmen and senators to understand the concerns of Native Americans," says foundation chairman Terrence L. Bracy.

Garcia was chosen for her scholastic excellence and because of her involvement in the Native American community. She is co-director of the UO Native American Student Union.

At the end of the internship, Garcia will receive a $1,200 scholarship. She’ll also receive round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C., lodging and reimbursement for her living expenses while there.

She will serve as an intern to Rep. Mark Udall. D-Colo.
