EUGENE–Audiences will have a choice of hearing familiar works from the classical repertoire or listening to experimental new music in the two concerts scheduled this week to conclude the 1998-99 concert season at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Sunday, June 6–Chamber Musicale

Student chamber ensembles will perform classical selections for strings and piano at a "Chamber Musicale" at 2 p.m. in Beall Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The program includes a two-piano suite by Rachmaninoff, "Variations on a Theme by Paganini" for two pianos by Lutoslawski, Haydn’s "Trio in C Major" for piano and strings, and two quartets for piano and strings: "Quartet in G Minor" by Brahms and "Quartet in C Minor" by Fauré.

The performers are graduate and undergraduate students under the guidance of Assistant Professor Gregory Mason, director of chamber music studies at the music school.

Sunday, June 6–100th Monkey Ensemble

The Hundredth Monkey Ensemble will perform adventurous new music by UO student composers. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, and admission is free.

Among the selections on the program are Elyzabeth Meade’s "Emperor of Ice Cream" (text by Wallace Stevens), Jeffrey Radcliffe’s "Excelsior," Alex Kelly’s "Chiaroscuro Reveries" (for dancer, gospel singer and mixed chamber ensemble), and two pieces by Jared Burrows: "Monkey Tango" and "Alex in Wonderland."

The Hundredth Monkey Ensemble was created this year as a vehicle for performing more experimental student compositions.
