When mezzo-soprano Milagro Vargas sings "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d" in Carnegie Hall at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, she will become the third University of Oregon music faculty member to perform this year in the world’s most prestigious concert hall. Vargas will be paired with baritone André Solomon Glover with the American Composers Orchestra, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. At least a dozen West Coast donors, UO music alumni and friends plan to attend the concert and most also will help celebrate the event at a special 6 p.m. reception on Monday, May 17, at the Steinway Studios on West 57th in New York City. Two outstanding UO graduates will perform–pianist Kelly Kuo, now attending the Manhattan School of Music and a student of internationally acclaimed artist Byron Janis, and trumpeter Brian McWhorter, now studying at the Juilliard School of Music. Other UO music faculty appearing at Carnegie earlier this year included violinist Fritz Gearhart paired with pianist John Owings in January and pianist Gregory Mason accompanied Grammy Award-winning soprano Susan Dunn in a March recital.
