EUGENEGarrett Hongo, director of the University of Oregon Creative Writing Program, will read from his work at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall,
1468 University St.
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is sponsoring the reading, which is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Hongo, who joined the UO creative writing faculty in 1989, is the author of "Volcano," a memoir which won the 1996 Oregon Book Award for Literary Nonfiction. He also has published two books of poetry, "Yellow Light" and "The River of Heaven."
"The River of Heaven" was the Academy of American Poets 1987 Lamont Poetry Selection. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1989.
Hongos poems and essays have appeared in American Poetry Review, Antaeus, New England Review, Ploughshares, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the New Yorker. He has received numerous honors, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim Foundation, and he was profiled on the PBS series, "Moyers: The Power of the Word."
Hongo is one of two UO faculty members who received 2000-2001 CAS Distinguished Professor awards. The College of Arts and Sciences presents this annual award to recognize senior faculty members for their scholarly achievements. The other recipient is Frederick Dahlquist, professor of chemistry and head of the UO Department of Chemistry. Dahlquist will give a public lecture at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2001.
