EUGENE–The University of Oregon expects more than 500 high school students of color to visit campus on Thursday, Nov. 30, to sample college life as participants in "Gateway 2000."

Nov. 17 is the registration deadline for the one-day visitation also known as "Gateway to the Future," but participants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

This free annual program, sponsored by the UO Office of Admissions, introduces college-bound African-American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Chicano/Latino and Native American students from Oregon high schools to the cultural and academic atmosphere of the UO campus.

Families are encouraged to attend Gateway 2000. From financing a college education to letting go, the program is designed to address the concerns of families as well as students.

Registration and a continental breakfast will be served from 8—9:30 a.m. in the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave. The opening session, from 9:30—10:30 a.m., will feature a performance by the UO Gospel Ensemble and a welcoming keynote address by President Dave Frohnmayer.

Participants then will learn about admissions and financial aid at the university. Lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

An academic interest session will be held from 1—2 p.m., followed by student panels from
2—3 p.m. The day will end by 4 p.m. with a closing program, including a raffle for prizes.

In addition, throughout the day the high school students and their families will have opportunities to tour the UO campus and its state-of-the-art facilities and to gather information about student services and activities, as well as to meet many students, faculty and staff of color.

To register and for more information, call the UO Office of Admissions, 1 (800) BE-A-DUCK (232-3825).
