Music Wrap-up for Nov. 26—Dec. 2

EUGENE–An eclectic mixture of musical styles and genres, ranging from band and orchestral repertoire to jazz, opera and folk dance, characterizes the four concerts scheduled this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Wednesday, Nov. 29–UO Campus Band and Campus Orchestra

The UO Campus Band and the Campus Orchestra will perform separately at an 8 p.m. concert in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Campus Band, under the direction of Graduate Teaching Fellow Suzanne Gindin, will perform "The Spirit of Orpheus" by Robert Smith, "Millennium: A Reflection" by John Higgins, "Blessed are They" by Johannes Brahms, "My Jesus, Oh What Anguish" by J. S. Bach and "Edgemont Overture" by Carl Strommen.

The Campus Orchestra, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Franklin Alvarez, will play "Light Music for Strings" by Alan Rawsthorne, "Petit Suite" by George Saint-George, "Ragtime Dance" by Scott Joplin and the finale of "St. Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra" by Gustav Holst.

Thursday, Nov. 30–Oregon Opera Ensemble

The Oregon Opera Ensemble, directed by new voice professor Mark Kaczmarczyk, will perform scenes and arias from famous operas at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Graduate and undergraduate voice students will perform selections from Mozart’s "Abduction from the Seraglio," Monteverdi’s "The Coronation of Poppea" and Britten’s "The Rape of Lucretia," as well as selections by Handel, Delibes and Purcell.

The singers also will venture into 20th-century repertoire with numbers from "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein and "Company" by Stephen Sondheim.

Though the emphasis is on the singing, the numbers will be performed with simple staging and costuming. Walter Kennedy, new assistant professor of dance, will choreograph the ensemble selections. Piano accompaniment is by graduate student Kumiko Shimizu, with additional strings, harpsichord and organ accompaniment on some selections.

Friday, Dec. 1–Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands

The Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands will present a full evening of jazz at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Oregon Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steve Owen, is the music school’s premier jazz group. Their program will include Neil Hefti’s "Teddy the Toad," Duke Ellington’s "Happy Go Lucky Local," Dave Douglas’ "At Dusk" and Lars Jansson’s "The Man with the Umbrellas."

Jazz Lab II, directed by Edward Orgill, will perform "All Blues" by Miles Davis, "Truth" and "Frankie’s Tune" by Bob Mintzer, "All of Me" by Seymour Simons and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" by Jimmy McHugh.

Jazz Lab III, directed by Bryce Peltier, will play "Rhyme" by David Springfield, "Shiny Stockings" by Count Basie, "Angel Eyes" by Brent Davis and "Easy Minor" by Tom Davis.

Friday, Dec. 1–East European Folk Ensemble

The UO East European Folk Music Ensemble, directed by Mark Levy, will provide music for a participatory folkdance at 8 p.m. in Agate Hall, 1787 Agate St. Admission is free.

The evening will feature live Bulgarian, Macedonian and Rom (Gypsy) music, with dance instruction. Beginners are welcome. Additional music will be provided by the Ras Dva Trio, a Balkan band from Ashland.
