EUGENE–Oregon Quarterly, the magazine of the University of Oregon, invites submissions to its Northwest Perspectives Essay Contest, this year judged by award-winning author Barry Lopez.

The winner will receive $500 and publication in the magazine, which is distributed to more than 100,000 readers. Oregon Quarterly is an award-winning regional magazine of ideas, offering the Northwest perspective on a wide variety of subjects.

Entries should address ideas that affect the Northwest, should be nonfiction, and should be no more than 2,500 words. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 31, 2001. There is no entry fee.

Last year’s contest drew more than 60 entries from around the Northwest. Guy Maynard, editor of Oregon Quarterly, believes this year’s will be even more popular.

"Now the word is out that we are actively seeking the region’s best essays," he says. "I’m really excited to see what comes in this year."

Lopez, author of several books including the National Book Award—winning "Arctic Dreams" and, most recently, "Light Action in the Caribbean," will be the final judge of the contest, selecting the top three finishers from the 10 finalists chosen by the Oregon Quarterly staff.

First prize in the contest is $500, and the winning essay will be published in the Summer 2001 issue of Oregon Quarterly. The second-place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the UO Bookstore, and the third-place winner will receive a $25 gift certificate. Those essays will be considered for publication in future issues of Oregon Quarterly.

The three award-winning essays also will be featured in a public reading, and the 10 finalists will be announced in the Summer 2001 issue of Oregon Quarterly.

The contest is open to all nonfiction writers, except for the following: (1) winners from previous years’ contests, (2) authors who have written a feature for Oregon Quarterly in the last calendar year (since Spring 2000), and (3) staff and family members of Oregon Quarterly and the University of Oregon Office of Communications. Entries should reflect ideas that affect the Northwest. There is no entry fee.

Additional manuscript submission guidelines include:

• Provide a cover sheet that includes only the essay title, word count and entrant’s name, address and telephone number.

• Entrant’s name must NOT be on any pages of the manuscript other than the cover sheet.

• One entry per person.

• Manuscript should be double-spaced on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper with minimum 1" margins
