WHEN 8:30-9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26
WHO * Approximately 200 Valley League high school students * Valley League principals, athletic and activity directors
WHERE Auditorium, Crescent Valley High School, 4444 N.W. Highland Dr., Corvallis BACKGROUND The Valley League conference is organized to promote spirit and sportsmanship among the 10 Valley League high schools. In his speech, Frohnmayer will advise students that there are no "natural born leaders" and that true leadership emerges in stages through observation and learning. He also believes that there cannot be leadership without "followership." Frohnmayer, who teaches a UO Freshman Seminar on leadership, says good leaders don't simply lead but also employ team management and motivational techniques.
"There is no set formula for making great leaders," says Frohnmayer. "But there are leadership behaviors that can be learned and attitudes that can be internalized."
A native Oregonian, Frohnmayer is the 15th president of the University of Oregon, the state's 121-year-old center for liberal arts, science and professional studies. He assumed the presidency on July 1, 1994, after serving as dean of the UO School of Law from 1992-94. Frohnmayer was Oregon's attorney general from 1981-1992, a UO professor of law from 1971-80 and represented District 40 (south Eugene and Goshen) in the Oregon House of Representatives for three two-year terms beginning in 1975.
