EUGENE--The University of Oregon expects more than 200 Oregon high school students of color on campus on Friday, Nov. 14, to sample college life and participate in "Gateway to the Future 97: Mosaic in Motion." This free annual program, sponsored by the UO Office of Admissions, provides college-bound African-American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Chicano/Latino and Native American students from Oregon high schools with an opportunity to experience the academic and cultural atmosphere of the UO campus, according to Kevin Sears, assistant director of admissions. " `Gateway to the Future' is specifically tailored to the needs, interests and aspirations often shared by students of color," says Sears. "Part of this experience includes spending the day with other high school students and current UO students and faculty members from similar racial and ethnic backgrounds." The high school students will learn about opportunities in post-secondary education through presentations and discussions led by UO officials and students. They also will learn about admissions requirements, financial aid and scholarship availability, housing options, career opportunities and campus and community resources at the University of Oregon. Registration, informational displays and a continental breakfast will start the day at 8:45 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on campus. President Dave Frohnmayer will welcome the visiting students during the 9:50 a.m. opening session in the Ballroom of the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave. In addition, Johnny Lake of the Salem Public Schools will give the keynote address, and students will be treated to a variety of cultural entertainments. Presentations from 11 a.m.-noon in schools and colleges across campus will highlight the quality and diversity of UO academic programs, Sears says. After lunch in the Carson/Hamilton dining hall, the high school visitors will take guided campus tours and attend ethnic group caucuses and special-interest seminars. Activities will conclude at 4:15 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom with evaluations, door prizes and refreshments. The UO will accept pre-registrations through Tuesday, Nov. 11.
