EUGENE--East or West, sirens and sages in the ancient world met on common intellectual ground more often than popular cliches suggest, according to a University of Oregon expert who has studied both. Steven Shankman, UO professor of English and classics, will deliver a free public lecture, "The Siren and the Sage: Knowledge and Wisdom in Ancient Greece and China," at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24 in the Alumni Lounge, Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on the UO campus. Shankman has served as director of the Oregon Humanities Center since 1994. His lecture is an outgrowth of work with Stephen Durrant, a UO professor of Chinese and East Asian languages and literatures who also serves as director of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. Together, Shankman and Durrant received the 1996-97 Collaborative Projects Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support work on their book, "The Siren and the Sage: Knowledge and Wisdom in Ancient Greece and China." -30- #P-7313/L
