UO School of Music wrap-up for Dec. 5-11:

EUGENE--Jazz trumpeter Paul Mazzio, Balkan folk dancing and a holiday choral celebration are among the five concert offerings scheduled this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Friday, Dec. 5--The Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands

The School of Music's award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble will perform with jazz trumpet guest artist Paul Mazzio at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Jazz Lab Bands II and III also will be on the program. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Under the direction of Associate Professor Steve Owen, the Oregon Jazz Ensemble will perform "Skittish" by Jim McNeely, "Second Race" by Thad Jones and "The Chopper" by John Fedchock. Selections by the other bands on the program include "Fly Me to the Moon," "Blues for Mousie," "Slo-Funk" and "Cabeza de Carne."

Native Oregonian Mazzio directs the Mount Hood Community College Jazz Band and is an active freelance trumpet player in the Portland and greater Northwest area. He has numerous professional credits, including touring and recording with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd. He has performed with Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Sara Vaughan, Nelson Riddle and Henry Mancini. Mazzio can be heard on recent CDs by Portland's own Tall Jazz and Art Abrams' Swing Machine Big Band.

Saturday, Dec. 6--Chamber Musicale

Student musicians will perform a wide variety of chamber music in a "Chamber Musicale" at 2 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The program includes works ranging from the late 18th to the early 20th century: a trio and a piano-cello sonata by Beethoven; a string quintet by Schubert; "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" by Villa-Lobos for six cellos; a Mozart quintet for string quartet and horn; a flute-harp duet by Jean-Michel Demase; and "Divertimento" for three clarinets and bass clarinet by Alfred Uhl.

Saturday, Dec. 6--University Percussion Ensemble

The University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of graduate teaching fellow Sean Wagoner, will perform at 4:30 p.m. in Room 198 of the Music Building. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and seniors.

The program includes "Episodes for Percussion Trio" by John Beck, "Japanese Impressions" by Anthony Cirone, "Momentum" for eight percussionists by William Kraft and a tribute titled "Vivo Vivaldi" arranged by Gary Gilroy.

Saturday, Dec. 6--Folk Dance Party

The UO East European Folk Music Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Levy, will be featured at a folk dance party beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Room 220 (the Janet Woodruff Gymnasium) of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St.

Admission is free and the public is welcome. Free folk dance instruction will be offered for beginners.

The program will consist of traditional music and folk dances from the Balkans--Bulgaria, Greece and the former Yugoslavia. For more information, call 346-2852.

Sunday, Dec. 7--Holiday Concert

Four university choirs will present a Holiday Celebration Concert at 6 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Associate Professor Mark Beudert will lead the UO Chamber Choir in "Four Motets for the Season of Christmas" by Poulenc, "A Consort of Choral Christmas Carols" by PDQ Bach and "Three Motets" by Charles Stanford.

The University Singers, under the direction of Associate Professor Richard Clark, will perform "Magnificat" by Latvian composer Imant Raminsh, "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" by John Gardner, and two versions of "Hodie Christus Natus Est" by Healey Willan and Jan Sweelinck.

The University Women's Chorus, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Jeanie Neven, will sing "Carol of the Bells," "In Excelsis Gloria" and Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Two Songs of Winter."

The University Men's Chorus, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Angelo Dias, also will perform.
