EUGENETwenty University of Oregon law graduates have received appointments as law clerks to judges in several western states.
Mervyn Loya, assistant dean and director of career services for the UO School of Law, says the clerkships, generally lasting one year, are prestigious and highly competitive appointments that clearly show the law schools century-old commitment to public service.
"We like to say here that we dont graduate lawyerswe graduate lawyers and leaders," Loya says, noting that many UO law school alumni go on to become judges, legislators and district attorneys in Oregon and elsewhere.
A judicial clerk is a lawyer employed to assist a judge with administrative, clerical and basic legal tasks. Clerks usually are assigned to do legal research, prepare bench memos, draft and edit the judges orders and opinions, and verify legal citations.
Loya says judicial clerking provides direct insight into the judicial process and gives clerks pragmatic and practical opportunities to develop skills in analysis, expression and legal problem solving.
