Sunday, Nov. 22University Symphony
The University Symphony, under the direction of Professor Wayne Bennett, will give its fall concert at 2:30 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
The orchestra will perform Wagners "Siegfried Idyll," Bizets "Carmen Suites 1 and 2" and Tchaikovskys "Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra," featuring faculty cellist Steven Pologe.
Pologe received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and his masters degree from Juilliard. During his early professional career he played for two years with the Rochester Philharmonic and one year with the Buffalo Philharmonic. Pologe also has been a member of the American Ballet Theater Orchestra and the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and was principal cellist with the New York String Ensemble, Rome Festival Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester.
He has performed throughout the United States and in Europe, including concerts in Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, the National Arts Club and the Lincoln Center Library of the Performing Arts, and a series of solo and chamber music appearances in Italy and Sweden. Prior to joining the Oregon music faculty in 1993, Pologe was principal cellist with the Honolulu Symphony for 13 seasons, appearing frequently as a featured soloist.
Monday, Nov. 23The Oregon Percussion Ensemble
The Oregon Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Graduate Teaching Fellow Sean Wagoner, will give a concert of contemporary and avant-garde percussion works at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Selections on the program include "Coming Together" by Frederick Rzewski, "Duo Chopinesque" by Michael Hennagin, "Bolero" by Richard Trythall, "Kotrab" by Richard Kvistad, and a marimba-voice duet, "By Lanterns and Candlelight" by Barney Childs, featuring graduate students Tracy Freeze and Lily Barmor.
The Oregon Percussion Ensemble is one of the premier contemporary ensembles on the West Coast, specializing in avant-garde classical percussion chamber music. The ensemble has been broadcast worldwide by WGBH Boston and in 1996 was nominated for the Laurel Leaf Award by the American Composers Alliance in New York.
Saturday, Nov. 28Horn Workshop
A free public concert at 5:30 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall will conclude an all-day horn workshop for high school horn players at the School of Music. The program will feature participants and members of the workshop faculty.
Associate Professor Ellen Campbell has put together a full day of activities for current and future horn section leaders, including master classes, rehearsals and sessions on ensemble techniques and section leadership. Faculty include John Cox, principal horn of the Oregon Symphony; Douglas Campbell, professor emeritus of Michigan State University; Cynthia Hutton, director of bands at Southern Oregon University; and Ellen Campbell, professor of horn at the University of Oregon.
