Sunday, Nov. 29Chamber Musicale
Student chamber ensembles will present a "Chamber Musicale" at 3 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Selections on the program include "Sonata in A Major for Piano and Violin" by Beethoven, the Allegro movement from "Quartet in G Minor for Piano and Strings" by Brahms, and "Quartet in E-flat Major for Piano and Strings" by Schumann.
The performers are predominantly graduate students at the music school.
Tuesday, Dec. 1Faculty Artist Series: The Oregon String Quartet
The Oregon String Quartet will give a Faculty Artist Series concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.
The Oregon String Quartet is one of the music schools flagship ensembles. Its members are Associate Professor Kathryn Lucktenberg, violin; Assistant Professor Fritz Gearhart, violin; Associate Professor Leslie Straka, viola; and Associate Professor Steven Pologe, cello.
The program will include Mozarts "G Major Duo for Violin and Viola" featuring Gearhart and Straka, Samuel Barbers "Dover Beach" featuring mezzo-soprano Milagro Vargas; and Mendelssohns "Quartet in E Minor."
Lucktenberg received her bachelors degree at the Curtis Institute of Music. She has participated regularly at the Marlboro and Grand Teton music festivals. As a former member of the Kasimir String Quartet, she performed throughout much of the United States and in Europe. She was concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony from 19821993.
Gearhart received his masters degree from the Eastman School of Music and has performed in major concert halls around the country, including Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall and the Kennedy Center. Prior to joining the UO music faculty, Gearhart was first violinist with the Chester String Quartet.
Straka holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from Arizona State University. She has been a featured artist at the Luzerne Chamber Music Center in New York, the Miami Bach Society, the Mainly Mozart and Flagstaff festivals in Arizona, and the York Festival in England.
Pologe received his professional degrees from the Eastman School of Music and from the Juilliard School. He has played with the Rochester and Buffalo philharmonics and the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and has served as principal cellist with the New York String Ensemble, Rome Festival Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Honolulu Symphony and the Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester.
Wednesday, Dec. 2Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands
Two guest artists will join the Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands for their fall concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Clay Jenkins, trumpet, and Kim Richmond, saxophone, each will make featured appearances on the program.
Jenkins has toured and recorded with the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Harry James and with such artists as Billy Harper, Lyle Mays, Milt Jackson, Peter Erskine and Joey Sellers. He is an adjunct faculty member at several Los Angeles universities and schools, and has recorded three solo albums. Jenkins is on the staff at the Jim Widner Summer Jazz Camps and has performed and given clinics worldwide.
Richmond is based in Los Angeles and works as a freelance musician, doing studio work, shows and various jazz venues. He has performed and recorded with the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Bob Florence, Vinny Golia, Clare Fischer, Louis Bellson, Les Brown and many others. Richmond has composed and conducted original scores for several movies and TV series, as well as new works for the concert stage. He is an artist-in-residence at the Jim Widner Summer Jazz Camps and a faculty member of the Bud Shank Summer Jazz Camp.
The Oregon Jazz Ensemble is directed by Associate Professor Steve Owen, and the Jazz Lab Bands are directed by graduate students Kevin Hoferer and Chad Sullivan.
Friday, Dec. 4Oregon Opera Ensemble
The Oregon Opera Ensemble, directed by Francis Graffeo, will perform scenes and arias from famous operas at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Graduate and undergraduate voice students will perform selections from "The Marriage of Figaro," "Cosi fan tutte," "Fidelio," "Faust," "La Boheme," "Street Scene" and other operas.
Though the emphasis is on the singing, the numbers will be performed with simple staging and costuming. Piano accompaniment is by graduate students Charles Badami and John Jantzi.
Saturday, Dec. 5University Percussion Ensemble
The University Percussion Ensemble, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Tracy Freeze, will perform contemporary percussion selections at 2 p.m. in Room 198 of the music school, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
The program includes five selections: "October Mountain" for percussion sextet by Alan Hovhaness; "Before the Beginning" for marimba quartet by Julie Spencer; "Fanfare: Beijing 1989" for percussion quintet by David Jarvis; "Battlestations II" for percussion quartet by Rich Holly; and "Little Windows" by Keiko Abe, featuring marimba soloist John Kalny.
Saturday, Dec. 5Folk Dance Party
The UO East European Folk Music Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Levy, will be featured at a folk dance party beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Room 220 (the Janet Woodruff Gymnasium) of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Free folk dance instruction will be offered for beginners.
