The Internet can provide information about almost anything–including good old Eugene. As part of the celebration of National Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 15-21), University of Oregon geographers are unveiling a new website. The Interactive Atlas of Eugene, http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~loy answers such questions as: Where does the oil and natural gas used in Eugene come out of the ground? Where do we get our food? How does the local landscape affect our rainfall? Project coordinator Bill Loy, professor emeritus in the UO geography department, says the website has five sections–Eugene in the World; Living in Eugene; Energy, Water and Food; The Economy of Eugene; and Transportation System. The sections are further divided into six or seven topics and each topic includes a map or other graphic followed by text and photos, as appropriate. "As far as we know this is the first website of its kind anywhere," Loy says. SOURCE: Bill Loy, UO professor emeritus of geography, at (541) 346-4970 or (541) 344-9588
