BACKGROUND

The University of Oregon Museum of Natural History is home to numerous pairs of some of the world’s oldest known shoes discovered by UO anthropologist Luther Cressman. Cressman discovered Oregon’s 10,000-year-old sandals in the 1930s near Ft. Rock in central Oregon. The collection is of international interest and has drawn the attention of Petr Hlavacek of the Technical University Brno, Czech Republic, an internationally known expert on ancient footwear. Hlavacek was part of the team of researchers who examined the shoes of the "Alps Iceman," a 5,200-year-old superbly preserved human discovered frozen in the Alps in 1991. Hlavacek will be examining the Oregon sandals in order to make reproductions that he will use to test the footwear for thermal qualities and durability.
