EUGENEConcert audiences this week can hear five original works in the final three concerts of the University of Oregons Festival of the Millennium, a three-week celebration of 20th-century music. A horn workshop and a concert by the University Band and University Orchestra complete this weeks concert schedule at the UO School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Sunday, Nov. 21University Symphony
The University Symphony, conducted by Professor Wayne Bennett, will continue the Festival of the Millennium by performing works by three great American composers at 3 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Selections on the program include "American in Paris" by George Gershwin, "Four Dance Episodes" from "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland, and "Suite for Violin and Orchestra" by William Grant Still, featuring UO faculty violinist Fritz Gearhart.
Sunday, Nov. 21Hundredth Monkey Ensemble
The Hundredth Monkey Ensemble will perform original selections for the Festival of the Millennium in a program titled "Return of the Hundredth Monkey." Concert time is 8 p.m. in Beall Hall, and admission is free.
Graduate student composers at the School of Music created the program and are also members of the ensemble: Daniel Heila, flute; Kurt Doles, clarinets; Alex Kelly, cello; Elyzabeth Meade, vocals and violin; Lily Barmor, piano and vocals; Jeffrey Radcliffe, horn; and Tracy Freeze, percussion. Other performers on the program are Kyle Sanna, guitar, and Blayne Barnes, violin.
Four of the selections are premieres for the Festival of the Millennium: "Queequeg" by Jeffrey Radcliffe, "One of Thirteen: White on White" and "It Make No Difference" by Elyzabeth Meade, and "ripple/eddy/rapid" which includes a video component, by Daniel Heila.
The musicians formed the Hundredth Monkey Ensemble in 1998 as a vehicle to try out new music created by members of the group, and the styles of music range from accessible to highly adventurous.
Monday, Nov. 22Faculty Artist Series: Steven Pologe, cello
To conclude the Festival of the Millennium, cellist Steven Pologe will perform a Faculty Artist Series recital at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.
A free talk with composer-in-residence George Crumb and his son David Crumb, a UO assistant professor of music composition and theory, will precede the concert.
Pologes program includes "Four on the Floor" (piano, cello, violin, bass) by Libby Larsen; two pieces by George Crumb, "Sonata for Solo Violoncello" and "Vox Balaenae" (Voice of the Whale) for three masked players (flute, cello, piano); and a world premiere by David Crumb, "Quartet for Piano and Strings."
Other UO faculty performers on the program include violinist Kathryn Lucktenberg, violist Leslie Straka, pianists Victor Steinhardt and Gregory Mason, flutist Alice Burke and bassist Forrest Moyer.
Pologe joined the UO music faculty in 1993, coming from the Honolulu Symphony, where he had been principal cellist for 13 years. Pologe received his professional degrees from the Eastman School of Music and from the Juilliard School. He has played with the Rochester and Buffalo philharmonics and the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and he has served as principal cellist with the New York String Ensemble, Rome Festival Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Italy and Sweden.
Tuesday, Nov. 23Campus Band and Campus Orchestra
The UO Campus Band and Campus Orchestra each will give a fall concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
The Campus Band, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Suzanne Gindin, will perform "American Folk Rhapsody No. 3" by Clare Grundman, "Awake" by Richard Wagner, "Salvation is Created" by Pavel Tchesnokov and "Festivo" by Vaclav Nelhybel.
The Campus Orchestra, directed by Graduate Teaching Fellow Ann Stafford, will play "St. Pauls Suite" by Gustav Holst and the "Christmas Concerto" by Arcangelo Corelli.
Saturday, Nov. 27Horn Day
A free concert will conclude an all-day horn workshop at the School of Music for high school horn players. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. in Beall Hall, featuring participants and members of the workshop faculty. Admission to the concert is free.
Associate Professor Ellen Campbell has put together a full day of activities for current and future horn section leaders, including master classes, rehearsals and sessions on ensemble techniques and section leadership. Faculty include John Cox, principal horn of the Oregon Symphony; Douglas Campbell, professor emeritus of Michigan State University; and Ellen Campbell, professor of horn at the University of Oregon.
