WHAT University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer will speak to the Eugene City Club about current issues facing the UO and higher education. He also will touch upon challenges facing Oregon and the nation and the need for increased civic engagement.

BACKGROUND

In his speech to the Eugene City Club, Frohnmayer will emphasize the importance of citizen involvement in neighborhoods and communities.

"We need to reach out to our neighbors in community celebrations, community service projects, and community self-help, everything from Neighborhood Watch programs to Habitat for Humanity," says Frohnmayer. "We need to tolerate viewpoints different from our own and concentrate on those things that draw us together."

A native Oregonian, Frohnmayer is the 15th president of the University of Oregon, the state’s 124-year-old center for liberal arts, science and professional studies. He assumed the presidency on July 1, 1994.
