The Hall of Achievement, established by the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication in 1998, honors graduates and faculty who have achieved distinction in their professions.
This years alumni honorees are Joann Byrd, 64, current editorial page editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; Robert Frazier, 48, former editorial page editor of The Register-Guard and long-time columnist for the Eugene paper; Ernest Haycox, 23, considered the leading western writer of his time chronicling the settlement of the West; and George H. Weber, 31, former president and long-time chairman of Cole & Weber Advertising, Portland and Seattle.
Faculty inductee Glenn Starlin, who helped launch public radio and television in Oregon and the nation, served the University of Oregon as a vice provost for academic affairs, as acting dean of arts and sciences and as a member of the telecommunication and film faculty for more than 30 years.
"A journalism education opens doors to careers in many fields. The Hall of Achievement celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of our graduates and faculty in diverse fields, from journalism and advertising to politics and software development," explained Tim Gleason, UO journalism and communication dean. "The four alumni and the faculty member we are inducting this year excelled in their chosen fields and, in doing so, elevated their professions and improved the larger community."
The induction ceremony will take place at a black-tie dinner Thursday, Oct. 19, at Eugenes Valley River Inn. A pre-dinner reception sponsored by The Register-Guard will begin at 6 p.m.
Alumni inducted in 1998 and 1999 include Don Belding, 19, founding partner of Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency; Paul Brainerd, 70, founder and president of Aldus Corp., creator of PageMaker software; Harry Glickman, 48, president emeritus of the Portland Trail Blazers; E. Palmer Hoyt, 23, former publisher of The Oregonian and The Denver Post; and Helen Angell Kitchen, 42, director of African studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.
Other alumni inducted in 1998 and 1999 include Tom McCall, 36, former Oregon governor; Lucile McDonald, 19, journalist and author; Lyle M. Nelson, 41, a journalism professor and national leader in higher education; Richard Neuberger, 35, former U.S. senator, newspaperman and nonfiction author; Randy Shilts, 75, reporter and author who wrote "And The Band Played On" and "Conduct Unbecoming"; James N. Wallace, 50, former foreign correspondent and a senior editor of U.S. News & World Report; and Dan Wieden, 67, co-founder, president and creative director of Wieden & Kennedy, Portland-based national advertising firm.
Former faculty and deans who were inducted in 1998 and 1999 include Eric Allen, the schools first dean; Charles Duncan, former UO journalism dean and Northwest historian; John L. Hulteng, former UO journalism dean and author of several major books on journalism ethics; and George Turnbull, former dean and author of four books on Northwest journalism and Oregon history.

Willis S. Dunway Journalism Resource Center in Allen Hall on the UO campus. Ultimately, the photos will be displayed in the Hall of Achievement seminar room made possible by a generous gift from the Baker family and The Register-Guard.
