EUGENE–Eighty-six University of Oregon students committed to cultural diversity through community service, leadership and academic excellence have been awarded Diversity-Building Scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year.

They were honored Oct. 6 at the third annual Diversity-Building Scholarship reception on the UO campus.

The UO Diversity-Building Scholarship Program recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who enhance the educational experience for all students by sharing their cultural experiences. These scholarships are an integral part of the university’s effort to meet the educational-diversity needs of its students.

Eligible students must be citizens of the United States, currently in good academic standing at the university or have applied for UO admission and met specific admission requirements. Priority consideration is given to students of ethnic background who hold a commitment to diversity through ongoing leadership or community activities and who meet the financial need guidelines as defined by the federal government. Preference is given to Oregon residents.

Each Diversity-Building Scholarship is a tuition-remission award, with grants ranging from partial to full tuition-and-fee waivers. The amount each recipient receives is based on financial need and is determined by the UO Diversity-Building Scholarship Committee.

Last year, the UO awarded Diversity-Building Scholarships to 118 students. Scholarships are renewable for up to 15 terms for entering freshmen, 12 terms for transfer and continuing students, and nine terms for graduate students. Students are required to meet specific scholarship-renewal requirements to retain the scholarship.

For information about the scholarships, call the UO Office of Admissions, (541) 346-3201.
