EUGENE–Robin Helene Holmes, a licensed clinical psychologist and associate director of the University of Oregon Counseling and Testing Center, has been named director of the center, according to Anne Leavitt, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

Holmes was selected after a national search that concluded in September. She will assume the role of director on Jan. 1, 2001, succeeding Weston Morrill, who announced last year he would step down as director after nine years as head of the 33-person student services unit. Morrill will continue as a member of the center’s clinical services staff.

Holmes has been on staff at the counseling center since 1992 and, in addition to serving as associate director of the center, she held posts including interim director, clinical director and coordinator, and staff psychologist. Holmes also taught undergraduate and graduate courses for the College of Education in counseling psychology, educational leadership, technology and administration.

As center director, Holmes will be a senior associate in the student affairs administration of the university. She will be part of the Student Affairs Council and the Bias Response Team and will serve as a resource to faculty and staff seeking strategies for meeting the developmental and psychological support needs of students.

"Student affairs staff and students are thrilled that Robin has accepted this appointment," says Leavitt. "Robin is an extremely effective clinician, administrator and advocate for students, and she will play an important role in our efforts to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment for our students."

During the next few months, Holmes will work with Morrill on the leadership transition. She plans to evaluate the administrative needs of the center, reviewing the mix of support and clinical staff, and recommending any reorganization or reconfiguration to provide the best possible support for the mission of the center.

"It is my belief that a college counseling center performs a critical function on any college campus, and visibility and reputation are critical," says Holmes. "My leadership style is a ‘hands on’ approach, and I will bring a collaborative leadership style, a strong work ethic, and a firm belief in working towards the health and well being of all who use our services."

Holmes holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the California School of Professional Psychology and received master’s and bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Fullerton.
