When UO student Amanda Stout was a child, she spent time in the University of Oregon’s Child Care and Development Centers (CCDC), a program designed for children of UO students and faculty. Now that she has grown up and is a student parent herself, she finds herself using these services again. Stout is one of many "second generation" student parents and child care staff who grew up in the program and who will be celebrating its 30th anniversary from 3:30—5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. For three decades, CCDC has helped to make education more accessible for student parents, while enhancing the early education of children and serving as a learning site for UO students. CCDC alumni like Stout will be there with other past and present members of the CCDC "family"–parents, students and staff–to help thank a program that has touched so many with fun, learning, sharing and caring. The celebration will take place in the Amphitheatre of the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), 1222 E. 13th Ave. on the UO campus (or in the EMU’s Ben Linder Room if it is raining). Blues guitarist David Jacobs Strain, renowned juggler David Kelly and talented singer Xavier Kylablue–all CCDC alumni–will perform at the celebration. Gregg Lobisser, the EMU’s director of student activities and a former CCDC parent, also will speak at the event. The CCDC program began in an old house that was "temporarily" allocated for child care use after student activists demanded space for a child care center in the late 1960s. The CCDC has not only retained its original house, but has added additional houses in the Moss Street neighborhood east of campus as well as facilities in the EMU and at Westmoreland Family Housing west of campus to better meet the needs of student parents in the campus community.
