Dr. Caldicott will share her views on the medical hazards of the nuclear age and environmental destruction. She will also comment on her upcoming address, "The Medical Consequences of Ecological Crisis." WHEN: Noon, Thursday, Oct. 2. WHERE: Maple Room, Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave, at the University of Oregon BACKGROUND: Caldicott, an Australian physician, founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. She also founded Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND), now operating as Women's Action for New Directions.
She is the author of four books, "Nuclear Madness," 1979, W.W. Norton; "Missile Envy," 1984, Bantam; "If you Love This Planet: A Plan to Heal the Earth," 1992, W.W. Norton; and her auto-biography, "A Desperate Passion," 1996, W.W. Norton.
Caldicott will give a free public lecture, "The Medical Consequences of Ecological Crisis," 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, in the EMU Ballroom. She also will talk about how and why the nuclear threat continues. Following the speech, she will sign copies of her books.
