In his 1997-98 State of the University address on Wednesday, Oct. 15, University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer addressed the university's achievements during the past year and outlined a three-stage process to define and address the challenges facing the UO as it enters the 21st century, including issues in enrollment, public support, new technology and the increasing demand for higher education among nontraditional students. Frohnmayer also touched upon the draft report by the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education and the Economy and its recommendations for a major restructuring of the state system of higher education.

Frohnmayer's speech was the main item on the agenda of the first meeting of the year of the University Assembly, whose members include all faculty and members of the student government senate.
