EUGENE--Students at the University of Oregon are choosing the fast lane--the fast food lane.

Students living in UO housing are increasingly taking their breakfasts and lunches from school cafeterias on the run as part of a new "grab 'n' go" offering.

"We started offering `to-go' options on a trial basis last year because we knew that many residence hall students were skipping the sit-down breakfast to save time in the mornings," says Fred Babcock, UO housing food services director. "The service was tremendously popular, much more so than we'd imagined, so we decided to increase the offerings this year and add to-go service at lunch as well."

Students order from a variety of menu options which are brown-bagged for take-out. Babcock says about one-third of the 2,500 students who eat in the cafeterias are taking advantage of the new service.

"We see this as part of growing trend toward customer service in college residence halls," says Babcock. "We're trying to be responsive to students' life-styles and preferences, while at the same time continuing to offer them healthful options."
