EUGENE--Eugene arts critic Fred Crafts will lead a first-ever Campus Arts Walk from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, to explore the arts and cultural resources available from eight arts groups on the University of Oregon campus. "This is a special opportunity for arts lovers young and old to discover some of the many cultural treasures to be found at the museums, in the galleries and on the stages of the university campus," Crafts says. "We'll sample what's currently available and learn about upcoming offerings so you can plan return visits to campus in the coming months." The free walk will begin promptly at 1 p.m. at Robinson Theatre in Villard Hall, 1109 Old Campus Lane on the northwestern corner of campus, near East 11th Avenue. Free parking is available in nearby UO lots. While there, visitors will see a scene from the recent University Theatre revival of "Ever the Dragon," have a chance to see costumes and sets up close, and get a preview of Robinson Theatre and Second Season productions planned during the 1997-98 season. Crafts and the Campus Arts Walk crew then will head for the LaVerne Krause Gallery in Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Blvd. During this 15-minute stop, visitors will have a chance to view painting, ceramics and installations by Department of Fine and Applied Arts students, mingle with the artists and learn about future exhibitions. Next stop on the walking tour will be the UO Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane. Museum staff will present an overview of recent changes in the 65-year-old institution, including renovation of the Throne Room, lobby and museum store. Visitors also will get invitations to coming exhibitions. At the Department of Dance in the Dougherty Dance Theatre, Room 353 of Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University St., student dancers will be rehearsing for a thesis performance. Dance faculty also will give visitors a brief back-stage look at mounting dance productions. Final stop on the two-hour walk will be the School of Music's Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. There, the featured attraction will be the chance to try out the plush new seats recently installed in the concert hall while learning about the completely refurbished lobby that now mirrors its original elegance 75 years ago. With musicians playing quietly in the background, visitors to the music school also will hear about plans for the 29th season of the Oregon Bach Festival and have an opportunity to get one of 25 festival CDs to be given away free.
Along the way, Campus Arts Walk participants also will see displays about the Museum of Natural History, which opted not to participate due to construction disruptions associated with the new UO law center next door, and the Oregon Humanities Center, which will highlight some of the many lectures, readings, conferences and other cultural events it hosts each year. Several of the stops also will offer refreshments to walk participants. Information about campus parking options for people attending UO arts and cultural events also will be on display or available as a handout. For more information, call the UO Office of Communications, (541) 346-3134, which is helping to organize and coordinate the Oct. 11 event. All of the sites on the walk are accessible to people with disabilities.
