EUGENE--Two fall "Saturday Safaris" at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History offer hands-on explorations for people of all ages about fossils and museum treasures.

Each three-hour safari event features a guided tour of a museum exhibit, followed by a related nature walk, demonstration or other activities. Each exhibit tour will begin promptly at noon at the museum, 1680 E. 15th Ave., and end by 3 p.m. Admission is $2 per person, $5 per family or free to museum members.

* Saturday, Nov. 1: Fossils

Join museum docents for a tour of the museum's newest exhibit, "Living on the Edge: The Geological Story of Oregon," then take part in activities including drawing fossils, learning how scientists use fossils to reconstruct the history of life on Earth, and hearing about fossils and the university's geological collections. Meanwhile, take a peek at the museum's new geology discovery boxes made for classroom use by local schools. Then take a guided trip to a local fossil site (transportation is by carpool).

* Saturday, Dec. 6: "Treasures"

Take part in a guided tour of the museum's exhibit, "Across Space and Time: Treasures from the UO Museum of Natural History," and then explore the theme of collecting. Activities will focus on why people collect; classification, cataloging and display; scientific illustration; and cultural resource management. Visitors are invited to bring samples of their own collections.

"The Saturday Safaris are meant for people of all ages and interest levels," says Tina Whitman, museum program intern. "We also encourage teachers to come to the November safari, particularly, to look over our new geology discovery boxes, which will be available soon for classroom use through the Eugene 4J school district. The discovery boxes are sets of specimens and curriculum kits for elementary and middle school levels."

The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, except university holidays. Admission is a $1 suggested donation.
