EUGENE--Would-be thespians in the local community and among University of Oregon students can try out for parts in upcoming University Theatre productions of Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts" and Federico Garcia Lorca's "Blood Wedding" during open auditions on Monday, Oct. 20, and Tuesday, Oct. 21. Monday's audition will begin at 6:30 p.m., while Tuesday's will begin at 5 p.m. Both will be held in Robinson Theatre at Villard Hall, 1109 Old Campus Lane on the UO campus. Auditioners should prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue. Callbacks will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22, at a time and place to be announced. "Blood Wedding" will open in the Robinson Theatre on Jan. 30, 1998, with additional performances on Jan. 31 and Feb. 5-7 and 13-14. It will be directed by Jack Watson, chair of the UO Department of Theater Arts. Lorca's passionate Spanish tragedy of unfortunate lovers includes several lead roles for both men and women as well as a strong ensemble. "Ghosts," directed by Neil Vanderpool, a theater arts master of fine arts degree candidate, will open on March 4 as part of University Theatre's Second Season in the Arena Theatre at Villard Hall. It will continue March 5-7 and 12-14. The premiere of "Ghosts" in 1881 sent waves of controversy through Europe, as critics condemned its references to syphilis, infidelity and destructive family secrets. The play has since become regarded as a classic of psychological realism and modern theater. "Ghosts" features several parts for actors over the age of 35, and both UO students and members of the community are encouraged to audition. For more information about auditions for both "Ghosts" and "Blood Wedding," call the UO theater arts department at (541) 346-4171. -30- #P-2090/A&E
