EDUCATION NOTE
EUGENE--James O'Fallon, the Frank Nash Professor at the University of Oregon School of Law, is the law school's new associate dean for academic affairs. UO law dean Rennard Strickland announced O'Fallon's appointment on Friday, Oct. 10. As associate dean for academic affairs, O'Fallon will act as liaison between administration and faculty at the law school and will oversee the school's academic standards. The position formerly was held by Professor Ibrahim Gassama and by law professor David Schuman, who left the law school in January to become Oregon's deputy attorney general. An expert on constitutional history and theory and on legal philosophy, O'Fallon joined the UO law faculty in 1981. Previously, he was an associate professor of law at the University of Detroit, a fellow in law and the humanities at Harvard University, an assistant professor of law at the University of Richmond and a law clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He also served as a public relations officer at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and as an officer in the U.S. Navy. O'Fallon received his bachelor of arts degree in 1966 from Kansas State University, and his master of arts and juris doctor degrees in 1972 from Stanford University. He was admitted to the California bar in 1973. O'Fallon also serves as the UO's faculty athletic representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In that capacity, he oversees university compliance with NCAA and Pacific-10 Conference regulations, and represents the university in the legislative processes of those organizations.
