EUGENE--Students, faculty and staff of color at the University of Oregon will have a chance to get acquainted, have some fun and build networks during a special reception from 6-9:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, in the Ballroom, Erb Memorial Union (EMU), 1222 E. 13th Ave.

The "Weaving New Beginnings: Building a Community" event will feature entertainment, music and artwork by UO students, faculty and staff of color in an informal, casual setting. The evening will include introductions of faculty members as well as information about various groups and events on campus. UO President Dave Frohnmayer, who will be out of town representing the university, will deliver a videotaped welcome at the event.

"Our hope is that the prepared food, live music and performances, art exhibits and information tables will help to establish a working network between students, faculty and staff, and build upon our community of color," said Cynthia Hui, Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) multicultural recruitment and retention coordinator.

"The significance of `Weaving New Beginnings' is that we are bringing together a community of color to mingle and to get to know one another on a social level--outside of the classrooms and away from the administration offices," said Robert Wasson, ASUO multicultural advocate.

Event sponsors include the UO Bookstore, Office of Student Academic Progress, Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Ethnic Studies Program, School of Music, School of Law, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Erb Memorial Union, Office of Student Life, Career Center, University Housing, School of Journalism and Communication, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Counseling Center, ASUO, and the Multicultural Center in the EMU.
