EUGENE—In his 1998-99 State of the University address on Wednesday, Oct. 7, University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer discussed ways in which the university is changing to meet the challenges of limited state funding, new student needs and a proposed new state budget model.

He described the benefits of a new Oregon University System funding model, as well as critical issues receiving attention from UO faculty, staff and students as part of the university's internal "Process for Change" planning effort. He also reviewed successes in academics and looked ahead to this year's successful culmination of the UO's Oregon Campaign, the largest fund-raising effort in the history of the state.

"Even in the face of great challenges, we must answer the call to create something grand. We already are blessed with a unique culture of caring, of sharing across disciplinary lines, of commitment to the future of our state," Frohnmayer said. "Now, with wise use of resources and imagination, we can carry the University of Oregon to new levels of community service and national renown."

Frohnmayer's speech was the main item on the agenda of the first meeting of the year of the University Assembly, whose members include all faculty and members of the student government senate.
