Tuesday, Oct. 27OcTUBAfest: A Toast to Mozart
UO tuba students and guest artists will feature the music of Mozart in the School of Musics annual OcTUBAfest at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
The UO Tuba Choir, directed by Richard Frazier, will be joined by members of the renowned Oregon Tuba Ensemble, directed by Jeff Turay, for an Octubafestoast to Salzburgs most famous resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Although Mozart didnt write any music for tubahe died before the tuba was invented, the program will include a variety of tuba and euphonium transcriptions of Mozarts musicincluding "Eine Kleine Tubamusik."
Thursday, Oct. 29Guest Artist Elly Ameling: Vocal Master Class
Elly Ameling, one of the worlds leading sopranos, will give a master class to UO singers at 7 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited to observe this superb artist as she shares her gift of song with a group of UO students.
Ameling is beloved and admired throughout the world for her splendid and expressive voice and her compelling artistry. Beginning with her professional debut as a concert singer in Rotterdam in 1953, she has performed for more than 40 years in virtually every major cultural center in the world. Her annual tours and frequent appearances with leading international orchestras have established her as one of the greatest singers of our age, having performed under such conductors as André Previn, Seiji Ozawa, Robert Shaw and many others. She has appeared on nearly 150 records, CDs and cassettes, and is in great demand throughout the world for her master classes.
Friday, Oct. 30World Music Series: Clarita and the Arte Flamenco Dance Theater
The School of Musics World Music Series will present Clarita and the Arte Flamenco Dance Theater, performing at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens.
Clarita is a dancer, teacher and choreographer who performs a wide range of Spanish dancezarzuelas, regional folk dance, reconstructed historical choreography, flamenco and escuela bolera. She strives to maintain the integrity of flamenco and other Spanish dance forms through continual research and study.
Clarita began her dance career at the age of six. After many years of study in the United States with the top names of Spanish and flamenco dance such as Jose Greco, Dolores and Jose Fernandez, Pedro Carbajal, Luisa Triana and Lydia Torea, she continued to master the art of Spanish classical, regional and flamenco dance in Seville and Madrid in the 1980s with Manolo Marin, Mario Maya, Juan Manuel, Mancilla & Margarita, and La Tati.
She has performed with La Familia Montoya, one of Andalucias premier dance families, and at festivals and private flamenco clubs throughout Spain and Europe as a solo artist with Spains finest flamenco artists.
In 1989, Clarita returned to the United States and created the Arte Flamenco Dance Theater, a company of 15 dancers, singers and musicians. The group has performed at numerous residencies, concert halls and festivals throughout the United States.
Saturday, Oct. 31Festival of Bands
The Northwests top high school marching bands will fill Autzen Stadium, 2700 Centennial Blvd., for the 20th annual Festival of Bands, one of the largest marching band competitions in the Northwest. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. for the preliminary rounds, featuring a wide variety of music, ranging from "Star Trek" and "City of Angels" to "Les Miserables."
Preliminary rounds will conclude with an exhibition performance by the Oregon Marching Band at 5:15 p.m. Finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., concluding around 10 p.m. with a special performance by the UO Green Garter Band. The Oregon Marching Band drum line also will give a clinic and performance during the lunch break. Awards will be given after both preliminary and final competitions, with a Grand Champion trophy capping the days event.
Tickets will be available at Gate B at the stadium on performance day. All-day tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets for those who wish to attend only the final rounds are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Children under five will be admitted free.
Wheelchair accessible seating is also available, with a courtesy van available for the physically challenged. Parking at Autzen is free, and cars should enter from Entry 2 off of Centennial Boulevard.
Concessions and souvenirs will be sold, with all proceeds benefiting the Oregon Marching Band. The Festival of Bands is the Oregon Marching Bands largest fundraiser of the year and is run entirely by band members and staff.
More than 20 bands from the Northwest will perform. Oregon entries include bands from Roseburg, Beaverton, Sunset, Grants Pass, Lebanon, Centennial, North Salem, South Salem, McKay, McNary, Sprague, Umatilla, Hermiston, Aloha and Roseburg high schools. The competition also will feature bands from Modesto, Calif., and Kennewick, Auburn and Vancouver, Wash.
The Festival of Bands competition is divided into four competitive classes and one exhibition class. All bands compete in the preliminary rounds during the day. In the evening, the winner of each category plus the eight highest scoring bands will compete in the finals.
