BACKGROUND:
The UO School of Journalism and Communication established the Hall of Achievement and inducted the first 11 members in October 1998. The Hall of Achievement seminar room in Allen Hall, funded by The Register-Guard, is part of the ongoing Allen Hall renovation.
"Our alumni and faculty had talked for some time about how best to honor the remarkable accomplishments and contributions of our alumni in so many different fields," explained Tim Gleason, UO Journalism and Communication dean. "By displaying the members of the Hall of Achievement in an academic room, they will serve as a daily reminder and inspiration to our current students of their own potential."
1998 inductees included Don Belding, 19, founding partner of Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency; Paul Brainerd, 70, founder and president of Aldus Corp., maker of PageMaker software; E. Palmer Hoyt, 23, former publisher of The Oregonian and The Denver Post; Helen Angell Kitchen, 42, director of African Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.; Tom McCall, 36, former Oregon governor; Lucile McDonald, 19, journalist and author; Richard Neuberger, 35, former U.S. senator, newspaperman and nonfiction author; Randy Shilts, 75, reporter, author and pioneering crusader in the battle against AIDS; Eric Allen, the schools first dean; Charles Duncan, former UO journalism dean and Northwest historian; and George Turnbull, former dean and author of four books on Northwest journalism and Oregon history.
