EUGENE–Fiber artist Barbara Setsu Pickett, a University of Oregon associate professor of fine and applied arts, will give a free lecture at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Museum of Art,
1430 Johnson Lane on the UO campus.

Her talk about weaving techniques and processes will be presented in conjunction with the Museum of Art’s current exhibition, "18 Points of View," which showcases artworks by UO fine and applied arts faculty members. The exhibition continues through Jan. 2, 2000.

Picket, who received a 1999 UO Summer Research Award for research on Chinese silk velvetweaving, says that since joining the UO fine and applied arts faculty in 1975, she has "slowly wound my ball, following the thread of my research into the realm of silk velvetweaving.

"Guided by the curiosity and the desire for the sublime," she adds, "I have explored the techniques and processes in England, Italy, France, Japan and, most recently, China. I have seen and woven beside weavers of extraordinary skill. They have shared their knowledge and experience, and for this I am deeply grateful."

A 1971 graduate of Portland State University, Pickett has exhibited her works throughout Oregon. She also has presented exhibitions in Chicago and Massachusetts.

Open from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, the Museum of Art is accessible to people with disabilities. Suggested admission is $3, except on Wednesdays when the MusEvenings! program offers free programming, refreshments and extended viewing hours from 5—8 p.m. Museum members, students with ID, UO employees and children are admitted free.
