EUGENE–The issues and controversies surrounding theft of intellectual property, including trademark, Internet and other copyright piracy, will be addressed during a Portland symposium sponsored by the University of Oregon School of Law.

The daylong symposium, "Intellectual Property Piracy," is sponsored by the law school’s Law and Entrepreneurship Center and takes place on Oct. 13 at the Portland Downtown Embassy Suites Hotel, 319 S.W. Pine St.

Symposium panels will address copyright and trademark piracy issues in the areas of music, software, visual media and the international arena. Speakers include attorneys from Dreamworks SKG, Microsoft, adidas America, Supertracks and Digimarc. Topics will focus on how attorneys and businesses might better address piracy issues in the digital age.

"This is a tremendous area of concern for copyright-based industries that are losing an estimated $22 billion a year to piracy," says Barbara Aldave, director of the UO Law and Entrepreneurship Center. "This symposium will address industry concerns and controversies that, within the next few years, are expected to drastically alter the way businesses involved in copyright-based technology operate."

The symposium’s keynote address will be delivered by Sean Hoar, assistant U.S. attorney in Eugene, who handled the prosecution for the nation’s first Internet piracy conviction under the No Electronic Theft Act. The law was signed by President Clinton in 1997 and makes it illegal to reproduce or distribute copyrighted works, such as software and digital recordings. Hoar will speak about prosecution guidelines on criminal copyright infringement cases, fair use proposals and industry issues.
