EUGENE--Kathryn Owen of the University of Colorado has accepted an offer by the University of Oregon to become associate vice president for development, with responsibility for all of Oregon's fund-raising programs. She joins the staff Nov. 1.

In her role as principal adviser to the UO president and vice presidents on fund raising, Owen will coordinate The Oregon Campaign, the university's current $200 million capital campaign, and also will oversee the annual fund, gift planning, major gifts, Portland development program, corporate and foundation relations, donor relations, and school and college development programs.

As head of the UO Development Office, she fills a position whose duties were broadened and redefined as part of a recent reorganization.

Owen has worked in development at the University of Colorado in Boulder for 12 years, the last five as College of Arts and Sciences director of development. During her tenure in the college, Owen secured some $36 million toward a university system-wide goal of $200 million for a 1988-93 capital campaign. Her efforts increased the college's endowment to more than $15 million, and annual gifts from alumni, parents and friends increased 12 percent annually.

"Kay has taken a good program and moved it forward in very creative ways," says Duncan McDonald, UO vice president for public affairs and development, to whom Owen will report. "I look forward to that same success here, where I am confident she will use her thoughtfully focused energy, long campaign experience and mentoring spirit."

Owen was selected from a field of 17 candidates after a national search and a series of interviews. University Librarian George Shipman chaired the search panel, which consisted of David Begun, development director for the UO College of Arts and Sciences; Bella Corbin, director of alumni and development information services for the UO Foundation; and Marian Friestad, associate professor of marketing in the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business.

A graduate of California State University, San Jose, with a bachelor's degree in theater arts in 1977 and a master's degree in technical design in 1979, Owen was a theater faculty member and costume designer at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif., from 1976-81. She then served four years as special assistant to the University of Colorado vice president for academic affairs before joining the University of Colorado Foundation in 1985 as College of Arts and Sciences development officer.

Owen has been a fund-raising consultant for various groups in Colorado, Texas, Germany and Switzerland. She also has been an officer or director of several community groups, including current service as a board member for the Boulder Philharmonic.
