SCHOLARS TO SPEAK ON ART COLLECTING SEPT. 27

EUGENE--In conjunction with the University of Oregon Museum of Art's current exhibition "Precious Cargo: The Legacy of Gertrude Bass Warner," the museum has invited six renowned art scholars to participate on Saturday, Sept. 27, in a public symposium on "Collecting and Connoisseurship of Asian Art: The Legacy of Mrs. Warner."

The symposium, one day before the exhibition closes, will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Room 115 of Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Blvd. on the UO campus. A reception from 4-6 p.m. will follow at the Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane.

Presenters will address a broad range of topics concerning the formation of important public and private collections of Asian art, the history of taste, and personal collecting of art in a variety of media, including textiles, paintings and prints.

Scheduled speakers are:

* Cynthea Bogel, a UO professor of Japanese art, who will discuss collecting of Japanese art;

* James Cahill, an internationally recognized authority on Chines painting, who will discuss collecting of Chinese painting;

* Susan Erickson, an Asian art historian at the University of Michigan, who will lecture from her research on the growth of Chinese art collecting in America;

* Dessa Goddard, director of Oriental art at Butterfield & Butterfield auctioneers, who will discuss collecting Chinese ceramics;

* Julia Meech, a consultant on Japanese art at Christie's, who will speak about Frank Lloyd Wright's personal collecting of Asian art; and

* John Vollmer, a leading scholar of Asian textiles, who will present a lecture on collecting Chinese textiles.

Cost of the event will be $10 for museum members, $5 for students and $15 for non-members and the general public. Preregistration is required through the UO Museum of Art; walk-in attendees will be accepted only if space allows.
