EUGENE--Harvard University labor analyst Elaine Bernard, an internationally recognized leader in university-based labor education, is the keynote speaker, Friday, Oct. 3, at a University of Oregon symposium on the future of labor.

The free public symposium runs from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Ben Linder Room at the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave.

Bernard, who is director of the Harvard University Trade Union Program, will speak on "The Future of Work and the Role of Unions." Bernard is an expert on labor movements in the United States and abroad, and on the role of unions in promoting civil society, democracy and economic growth.

The UO Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) is sponsoring the symposium as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. The forum will address the changing nature of work. A panel of university faculty, students and local union leaders will respond to Bernard's talk.

The Oregon Legislature established LERC in 1977 as a way to provide education and research to workers. LERC offers classes and conducts research in the fields of occupational safety and health issues, technological change, special concerns for women and minority workers, and a range of issues linked to collective bargaining and labor management relations.

"LERC has grown in the last 20 years to include programs on work force skills development, ergonomics and international labor issues," says Margaret Hallock, LERC director.

LERC will also host a fund-raising dinner at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, at the Eugene Conference Center, Two Eugene Centre, next to the Hilton Hotel. Tickets cost $40 each.

For more information about the symposium or the dinner, contact LERC, (541) 346-5054.
