EUGENE--The University of Oregon School of Music's Faculty Artist Series begins its 1997-98 season this week with a concert featuring violinist Kathryn Lucktenberg at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.

Two other School of Music faculty--pianist Gregory Mason and cellist Steven Pologe--will join Lucktenberg on the program. Together, they will perform "Sonata in E Major" by Mozart; "Sonata for Violin and Piano" by Poulenc; and a trio by Shostakovich for violin, cello and piano.

Lucktenberg is a UO associate professor of violin. A fourth-generation violinist, she studied at the Curtis Institute of Music where she completed high school and earned her Bachelor of Music degree. In 1979, she made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and within a year after graduation from Curtis she joined the Honolulu Symphony as concertmaster. During her 11 years in Hawaii, she also was a member of the Honolulu Symphony String Quartet and served on the faculty at the University of Hawaii. Lucktenberg has won several national contests and was a semifinalist in the 1982 Indianapolis International and the 1986 Carl Flesch International competitions.

Mason is a member of the UO piano faculty, teaching accompanying and chamber music. Among his credits are tours of Central and South America, and recital at Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, the Casals Festival, the United Nations, the Yale Collection of Historic Instruments and Carnegie Recital Hall. Mason worked for seven years as coach and accompanist in New York City, where he was pianist for the American Music Competition, the Vincent La Selva opera classes at the Juilliard School, and a Placido Domingo master class at the Metropolitan Opera.

Pologe received his professional degrees from the Eastman School of Music and from Juilliard. He has played with the Rochester and Buffalo philharmonics and with the Brooklyn Philharmonia. He also has served as principal cellist with the New York String Ensemble, Rome Festival Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Honolulu Symphony and the Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester.
