Saturday, Sept. 26–Children’s Concert Series: "Be A Marching Duck"

"Be a Marching Duck," one of the UO School of Music’s most popular children’s programs, returns for a sixth year on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at Autzen Stadium, 2700 Centennial Blvd. Tickets, available at Gate C on the east side of the stadium, are $2 per person, child or adult, or $5 for a family ticket.

Parking is available for $1 in the Boy Scouts’ parking lot across from the stadium, and parents are encouraged to arrive a little early to navigate the Coburg Road construction and get across Centennial Boulevard to the stadium entrance. The program will end by 10 a.m., and cars must be removed from the lot by 10:30 a.m. to make room for football game patrons.

Children will receive a kazoo when they enter the stadium, and the Oregon Marching Band will teach them the Oregon fight song ("Mighty Oregon"). All youngsters will then break into four "marching clinics" with members of the band and get some hands-on marching instruction right on the field. At the conclusion, everyone will watch the Oregon Marching Band go through a final rehearsal of its halftime show for the football game.

The UO Children’s Concert Series, now in its fifth season, is subtitled "Lively Music for Young Listeners." The series is designed to introduce young people and their parents to different kinds of music and help them develop good listening skills.

For more information about the Autzen Stadium program or the Children’s Concert Series, contact Ellen Campbell at 346-3776 or the music school’s publicity office at 346-5678.

Wednesday, Sept. 30–Faculty Musicale

The University of Oregon School of Music will welcome students and the public back to campus with its annual "Faculty Musicale" at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens. Proceeds from the concert will go toward music scholarships.

The concert is designed to welcome both new and returning students to the music school and allow them to see and hear a variety of the music faculty in performance. A reception will be held following the performance, where students and the public can meet informally with the faculty and performers. Light refreshments will be provided.

The concert will feature solos by organist Barbara Baird, gospel singer John Gainer and new faculty violinist Fritz Gearhart; piano solos by Bob Cloutier, Claire Wachter and Gregory Mason; a Chopin nocturne with cellist Steven Pologe and pianist Victor Steinhardt; Gershwin preludes featuring duo-pianists Christine Mirabella and Mary Elizabeth Parker; a 17th century piece for harpsichord and violone featuring Anne Dhu McLucas and Marc Vanscheeuwijck; and Bulgarian folk music performed by Mark Levy, along with Carol Silverman and Nora Holmquist.
