EUGENE–One-of-a-kind works of art created and donated by 55 acclaimed artists will go to the highest bidder on Saturday, Oct. 17, during "The Artful Clock: It’s All About Time" gala auction and dinner, a fund-raiser for the University of Oregon Museum of Art.

The event, organized by museum volunteers, will be held in the Pittman Room at the Casanova Center, 2727 Leo Harris Parkway in Eugene. It will begin at 6 p.m. with silent-auction bidding on 25 of the timepieces. Dinner and an oral auction of 30 timepieces will follow at 7 p.m., with Sid Voorhies as auctioneer.

Tickets are $95 a person, with all proceeds from the auction and dinner benefiting the UO Museum of Art’s exhibitions and programs for 1998-99.

From Oct. 2—15, the works of art to be auctioned will be on exhibit at the Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane on the UO campus. A preview party for the artists is set from 5:30—7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, during the free weekly MusEvening! program at the art museum.

Judi Cleaveland, chair for the fund-raiser, believes viewers will be amazed by the outstanding creativity each of the artists has put forth in their work.

"Everyone involved with this event has been overwhelmed by the final creations these talented artists have donated," she says. "Each work of art is a treasure and tells a special story. I hope if people can’t attend the auction, they will at least visit the museum the two weeks prior to the event to view the works on preview, because they really are outstanding."

The fund-raising event will feature works encompassing a variety of media, sizes and formats. They range from a multi-layered, watch-face-created "Mona Lisa" by Vern Haffner to a tiny "Bamboo Book" necklace by Jeanine Payer.

Among other artists who have donated creations to the art museum fund-raiser are Jill Atkins, Robert Canaga, Kathleen Caprario, Mark Clarke, Peg Coe, Allen Cox, Jon Jay Cruson, Kristy Edmonds, Hannah Goldrich, Frank Gosar, Jennifer Guske, Gil Harrison, Yuji Hiratsuka, Wendy Huhn, Dinah Cross James, Pat Jangels and David Joyce. Also donating one-of-a-kind timepieces are Barbara Kensler, Connie Kiener, Miriam Kley, Mary Lancaster, Celeste LeBlanc, Thomas Mann, Michael McCulloch, Megus McDonald, Jewell Murphy, Faye Nakamura, Carl Niederer, Ken Paul, Christopher Perry, Lynn Peterson and Dan Powell.

Other donors of "artful clocks" for the Museum of Art benefit auction are Wendy Rholl, Catherine Roundthaler, John Rose, Robin Russell, Beverly Soasey, Mark Soasey, Gary Stanfield, Brad Stangland, Christine Sundt, Katie Swenson, Tom Urban, Ruth VonBuren, John Van Dreal, Kate Wagle, Cyndy Weill, Jane West, Jerry Williams and Betsy Wolfston.

The UO Museum of Art, accessible to people with disabilities, is open from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Suggested admission is $3, except on Wednesdays when the MusEvenings! program offers free extended viewing hours from 5—8 p.m. UO faculty and staff, children under 13 years of age and Museum of Art members with identification are admitted free.
