EUGENE–Tickets are on sale now for "Faust/Faustus: A Duet for Devils," a performance art piece conceived and designed by a UO faculty artist that will be performed in early October at the University of Oregon Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane.

Seating is limited for the performances which are set for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 7—8, as well as for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. Ticket prices are $12 for the general public and $6 for museum members and for UO students, faculty and staff with valid identification. To purchase tickets, visit the museum’s front desk or call (541) 346-0942.

"Faust/Faustus" draws on excerpts from two versions of the Faust legend–Christopher Marlowe’s "Tragical History of Doctor Faustus" and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s "Faust"–
together with recent scientific research on HIV-resistant genes. The research involves a mutant gene that appeared in Europe in the midst of the catastrophic Bubonic plague of the 14th century. The performance portrays Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus and Goethe’s Faust as they share their final hour prior to damnation.

Produced by the Creative Material Group, "Faust/Faustus" was conceived and designed by Leon Johnson, a UO visual design professor who developed it with actor Christopher Biddle. The performance opened at the San Francisco Fringe Performance Festival in September. Following the University of Oregon Museum of Art performances in October, there will be a Spring 2000 performance in the Quartersaw Gallery in Portland and a Summer 2000 tour of London.

This performance art piece is scheduled in conjunction with "18 Points of View," the UO fine and applied arts faculty exhibition running through Jan. 2, 2000, at the Museum of Art.

Accessible to people with disabilities, the Museum of Art is open from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Suggested admission is $3, except on Wednesdays when the MusEvenings! program offers free programming, refreshments and extended viewing hours from 5—8 p.m. Museum members, students with ID, UO employees and children are admitted free.
