EUGENE–John Halgren of Springfield begins his term as president of the University of Oregon Alumni Association Board of Directors for 1999-2000 as the association prepares for its fall meeting scheduled Sept. 24—25.

Halgren, 55, who earned a master’s degree from the UO in 1968, is a retired Springfield elementary school principal. He succeeds Christine Sullivan, chief executive officer of the advertising and public relations firm Sullivan Pattison Clevenger.

Halgren has been a UO Alumni Association director since 1994. The UO College of Education honored Halgren in 1998 with a Distinguished Alumnus Award for his 20 years of service to education. He is also a charter member of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, chair of the board of directors of McKenzie-Willamette Hospital and a member of the Springfield Rotary and Chamber of Commerce.

His wife, Joanne, is head of the interlibrary loan services department at the UO’s Knight Library. The Halgrens have two sons.
