Size: 90,000 square feet of new space and 79,000 square feet of remodeled space for 169,000 square feet of new and remodeled space.

Features: • Custom-designed 30-foot-high by 50-foot-wide climbing wall

• 1/10 mile, seamless, poured indoor jogging track

• 10,000-square-foot fully equipped strength and fitness room

• 20,000-square-foot, three-court gymnasium for basketball and volleyball

• Refurbished 25-meter swimming pool

• Six multi-purpose rooms for aerobics, martial arts, meditation, and other uses.

• Artificial turf field with night lighting for soccer, softball and other field sports

• Athletic training/injury facilities; new locker rooms

• Juice bar

• Fully enclosed separate six-court tennis center (To open spring 2000)

• Eight racquetball, handball and squash courts (To open spring 2000)

Art: Basalt column fountain that emerges from beneath the entrance terrace, contains 60

tons of basalt that is illuminated at night by reflected fiber optic light.

Two decorative architectural glass panels featuring optical hand-cast glass prisms

to reflect colors of light and multiple layers of etched glass creating a sense of motion.

Users: UO students, staff and faculty, members of the UO Alumni Association.

Construction: Phase I construction began in fall 1998 and will be completed for the first day of fall

classes, Sept 27. Phase II will be completed spring term 2000

Funding: Design and construction of the center cost approximately $20 million. The project is financed with $10 million from UO Student Recreation Center fees and $8.4 million from the Oregon University System Student Building Fee. The project collaborated with several units within the university to create and enhance the facility. They include the University Health Center, the Athletic Department and Facility Services.
