EUGENEThe University of Oregon is giving its student workers an extra pat on the back this week in conjunction with National Student Employment Week, April 410.
Five UO studentsfrom Coos Bay, Cove, Eugene and Portland, Ocean Shores, Wash.received National Student Employment Week awards during a campus ceremony April 7.
"This award recognizes the contributions of student employees to their colleges and communities," says Linda Huberd, UO Career Center employment services specialist. She notes that seven out of 10 UO students work while attending classes, according to the Career Centers most recent biannual Career Survey.
Award criteria include reliability, quality of work, initiative, disposition/attitude, longevity, adaptability and uniqueness of contributions. Nominated by their employers, each of the winning students received a gift certificate from the UO Bookstore.
Of 30 students nominated, the five winners are:
Katy Reiber, a sophomore pre-business administration student of 1505 Stock Slough, Coos Bay, who works in the Proficiency-based Admission Standards System (PASS) office. Although Reiber came to PASS only with basic office skills, she has become an integral part of the office, thanks to her problem-solving skills and her enthusiasm for learning. Some of Reibers significant accomplishments include managing and organizing the data base system and basic PASS Web page information; event planning assistance; creating a system for storage space inventory; and creating and managing a tracking system for PASSs multiple publications.
Holly Wright, a senior business administration major of 804 French St., Cove, who works at the College of Education/EC-CARES office. As a records clerk for almost four years, Wright has helped institute major office changes and is extremely knowledgeable about the office systems. Her flexibility, loyalty and ability to produce consistent, quality work serves her well in meeting deadlines and dealing with crisis situations at EC-CARES.
Erin Pattyn, a senior sociology major of 4439 Fox Hollow Rd., Apt. 7, Eugene, who works at Academic Advising and Student Services. In her more than three years there, Pattyn has worked as a receptionist, providing excellent service to the students she serves. Helping to train other workers and showing initiative, Pattyn plays an important role in the office.
Darlene Xiong, a junior business administration major of P.O. Box 16224, Portland, who works in the Gift Planning at the Development Office. For more than a year, Xiong has worked as an office assistant, using her strong computer skills to perform tasks including creating charts and graphs for donor presentations. Supervisor Debbie Anders explains that Xiongs responsibility in handling very confidential information and her initiative in self-starting projects makes her an important asset to the office.
Edward Callow, a second-year law student of 752 Lanyard Court, Ocean Shores, Wash., who works as a law clerk in the Natural Resources Division of the Washington State Office of the Attorney General. Since becoming the only first-year law student ever hired by the office, Callows thorough research, advanced analytical skills and high energy level have impressed the attorneys in his division. Callow handles a wide array of issues but works primarily with the Habitat Conservation Plan litigation team, helping defend the divisions highest priority cases.
The 25 other UO students nominated for the National Student Employment Week Award, who will receive certificates of appreciation, include:
Mindy Shaw, a senior exercise and movement science major of 61351 Robinhood Lane, Bend, who works for the International Institute for Sport and Human Performance.
Rachel Brown, a senior undeclared major of 5125 S.W. Beals Ave., Corvallis, who works in the Western Regional Resource Center.
Megan McVicar, a sophomore political science major of 1720 N.E. Vine Ave., Corvallis, who works in the Office of International Education and Exchange.
Jessica Loewen, a senior pre-journalism student of 15270 Salt Creek Rd., Dallas, who works at the Erb Memorial Union Child Care and Development Center.
Mandy Chong, a senior Asian studies major of 1555 W. 18th Ave., Apt. 18, Eugene, who works for the Erb Memorial Union Board of Directors.
Joshua Goldberg, a senior chemistry major of 455 Autumn Ave., Eugene, who works for Environmental Health and Safety.
Robie Honeyman-Colvin, a senior environmental studies major of 320 Sunshine Acres Dr., Eugene, who works for the Pesticide Use Reporting Program of the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (NCAP).
Eileen Lawlor, a senior sociology major of 2250 Tyler St., Eugene, who works in the Office of Academic Affairs.
Carlos Maza, a senior business administration major of 1644 E. 27th Ave., Eugene, who works at the Office of Admissions.
Marisa Berninghausen, a sophomore psychology major of 4421 S.E. 24th St., Gresham, who works at the Office of International Affairs and the Office of International Education and Exchange.
Meggan Richard, a senior Japanese major of 31047 S.E. Jackson Rd., Gresham, who works at the Yamada Language Center.
Rachel Turner, a senior humanities major of P.O. Box 733, Lakeview, who works in the Office of International Education and Exchange.
Coreen Gallagher, a sophomore exercise and movement science major of 540 Eastwood Dr., Medford, who works at the Office of Public Safety.
Renee Carrier, a sophomore environmental studies major of 1839 S. Parkview Circle, Milwaukie, who works at the School of Journalism and Communication.
Olivia Firth, a junior history and English major of 3043 N.E. 52nd, Portland, who works for the UO Alumni Association.
Mary Stuenkel, a freshman sociology and pre-psychology major of 17041 N.E. Halsey, Portland, who works for Hypatia, the Center for the Study of Women in Society and the Department of Philosophy.
Liisa Heddens, a junior English major of 1623 Yokum Rd., Riddle, who works for the School of Music.
Shelah Hanson, a senior sociology major of 628 49th Ave. S.E., Salem, who works at the Law School Career Services Office.
Michell Chalmers, a senior psychology major of 1492 Crooks Creek Rd., Selma, who works in the School of Law.
Leigh Freeman, a senior public relations and communication studies major of 1252 Wade Rd., Siletz, who works in the Office of Communications.
